Welcome to Third Grade!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by to see what Fillmore's third grade is all about!
ABOUT THIRD GRADE
Third grade is a big transitional year where your child will grow physically, academically, and emotionally. Responsibility is big in my class. Monday Folders will be sent home each week with reports, calendars, important information, and even biweekly grades.
There will be a "Homework Hoops" page that will be brought home nightly. You can find this template in "Parent Information". This paper shows any homework assignments and important information of upcoming events. Please check your child's folder each evening, so students do not miss out on fun upcoming activities. This website can also be a resource for information for major events.
ABOUT THE CURRICULUM
Third grade is the beginning of standardized testing. The two major tests include the ILEARN (formally the IREAD), which focuses on the Language Arts aspect of school (i.e. sounds, blends, reading, and writing) and the ISTEP. In third grade, students are tested in two major subjects: Reading/Language Arts and Math. It is important for your child to have their basic addition and subtraction skills before entering the third grade. Our Math series is new and very fast paced, and students who do not know their basic facts have a difficult time keeping up.
It is also important that your child can read independently. Taking 10 minutes every evening to read a book, newspaper, or magazine can greatly increase your child's lexile scores. For some tips on how to encourage reading, click HERE.
To ensure your child's success, collaboration between the parent and the teacher is essential! Let's get the "ball rolling" and start up a great year!
ABOUT THE TEACHER
This will be my fifth year teaching 3rd grade at Fillmore Elementary. I have previously taught younger age groups including kindergarten and preschool. I was raised a South Putnam Eagle and graduated from the corporation in 2006. I attended Indiana State University where I double majored in Elementary Education and Special Education. I took my future a step further and received a minor in ESL (English as a Second Language). Teaching has been my dream since I was in 3rd grade. It is true that it is not work if you love what you do, and I truly love teaching. Thank you for letting me teach your child this year.
At the top of this page, you can see tabs that go to upcoming events, parent information, and weekly focus links.
